  • Richard

I wish you had included Stewart Alexander the Socialist Party candidate also. He is a great speaker.

    • Alan

I agree that it would also be great to hear from Mr. Alexander too. If I recall there was some sort of criteria for inclusion here, like being on enough state ballots to have a statistical chance of winning and perhaps 1% in a credible poll. The Alexander/Mendoza team is included at Project Vote Smart as one of 417 Presidential contenders here: http://votesmart.org/election/2012/P/2012-presidential-election#.UH4tRK6_PKg

      • Jack

The 417 number is unreliable as it includes candidates that have suspended their campaigns (Michele Bachmann for example). You know that your source also lists Santa Claus as a candidate, right? And we’re supposed to take this website seriously?

        • http://www.facebook.com/veronica.nowakowski.9 Veronica Nowakowski

That is an actual candidate, a man who changed his name legally

          • Jack

Still though, it includes people who have suspended their campaigns, along with people who (by the looks of it) never really campaigned in the first place.

          • Brian

the requirement I think was to be eligible on enough ballots to theoretically get the 270 to win, I think, plus the 1% polling.

          • Jack

That’s a good point. If you’re using that criteria then Alexander was fairly excluded. It would have been nice to hear from him though…
I still stand by my claim that the 417 number is unreilable and misleading.

        • Barry

Claus will never win due to his pro-child labor stance and animal cruelty background

    • http://www.facebook.com/al.suarez.33 Al Suarez

You know what is really fucking stupid? People who have been brainwashed by capitalism their whole life.

True we have been conditioned most of our lives. We have to tune out the rhetoric and start using our noggins to reverse the conditioning.

        • theHappyTrotskyist

You are ‘fucking stupid.’ If you don’t believe in humanistic rights to health care and food/water/shelter, then you are a sick person. Check out cpusa.org, they have some great ideas. Don’t be put off by their name, they are probably the most levelheaded people I’ve ever heard. AND Stewart Alexander is one of the best candidates I have seen. Jill Stein isn’t a socialist, she believes in reforming capitalism. That, my friend, isn’t socialism.

          • Guest

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a taste of what the debate will sound like…just a bunch of ideological arguments.

          • http://twitter.com/webfryes Micah Dameron

CPUSA.org believes everyone has a right to a job, healthcare, and education.

THESE ARE NOT RIGHTS. Ready availability to these services can only emerge from a free-market system. Taxing your people to death to provide these so-called “rights” will only destroy your economy. Once everyone is getting paid for the work that others do, no one will have to work anymore, and no one will have any incentive to work, so everyone will starve. Read your history lessons. Communist Russia it’s the same story over, and over, and over again.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are basic rights. Food, employment, and education are not!! The government cannot be your GOD it cannot be your sole provider, no system of government can do this and none ever will.

Supporters of socialism want the government to be their God. They see the government as the arbitrator of and solution to all problems. But governments cannot fulfill this role, something our founding fathers understood, and something we need to understand again or else we are in BIG TROUBLE.

Work hard, and in a capitalistic society you will do well. The reason there aren’t jobs available for everyone right now is because our government is employing socialistic keynesian economics that are exacerbating our debt problem and not helping it.

Elect Gary Johnson this year to help start bringing our government back under the control of the people and the economy back into the hands of the free market so that JOBS can be readily available for everyone.

I am an american living in England. What people forget is that some people do not, and never will have, the IQ or ability (due to mental or physical illness) to hold a job or function fully in society. I am proud to live in England where people are looked after….some people take advantage, it is human nature, but I do believe it is every humans right to be able to eat, have shelter and an education. England provides these things for its people, what they do after that is there own doing….I have started my own business and been able to pursue my dream as a musician thanks to the help I received from the government here. I no longer need their support…..to keep people in poverty creates criminals…..America needs to stop taxing all its citizens so that it can be a super military power, and invest in its own people…..all the reasons it goes to war are for lining the rich man’s pockets anyway…..

          • http://www.facebook.com/patricia.mcgrath.77 Patricia McGrath

I agree that we need to stop with the military spending and the bail outs, but explain to me why it is my responsibility to support everyone else. I work hard for my money and those that know me, are aware that I will do everything in my power to help them. Charity and social responsibility should be an individual choice not a government mandate.

          • Belle

Seriously, use grown up words, please. I will stick to the values set in the Constitution. The organic one that exists off site. The one that protects the individual, where NO ONE sits above you. You want to give out free water…look what they did to the water. They’ve poisoned it to make “us” less intelligent and sick. Look what they’ve done to the air you breathe. They spray toxic chemicals and viruses. When we start living our true United States for America Constitution, we will again be on the road to greatness.

          • AKT118

Do you know why we pay for food? So we can sit on our computers cursing about politics while someone else puts in the labor to grow and make it. If you would like food to be free, feel free to get a farm.

          • FU

Everyone has the right to food, water and shelter. That doesn’t me they have the right to make other people provide it to them.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Johnson/100001505212456 Neil Johnson

Please explain how the person who you claim has a right to food, water and shelter can obtain those necessities without forcing someone else to provide them – either directly or through the coercive power of the state.
A right is something two people can enjoy simultaneously. Take a simple example. If you claim a right to own a car then someone else must be forced to give up the product of his labor to provide that car. His right to keep the product of his labor or the fruits of his labor and your right to a car cannot exist simultaneously.
The only way a government can operate is by a threat of force in the most general sense of the term. You are forced to give up the product of your labor in the form of taxes to provide for the benefit of another person.

          • http://www.facebook.com/debbie.horn.750 Debbie Horn

Lets see here, god gave us water, food and fresh air to breath. Man makes you pay for it. Really, who is really in charge here?

          • Sam

Think about this before you start name calling. Health care is a service. Food, water, and shelter are goods or tangibles if you prefer. To say that they are rights means that they are required to be provided and/or paid for by another. How can you say that it is a right i.e. that it is right for one human to demand the provision of a service or good from another human? That does not make sense and it some circles it is known as coercion or enslavement. This is the flaw in thinking that human wants or needs are human rights. Your only right is to have equal access and opportunity to provide health care, food, water, shelter for yourself. That line of thinking doesn’t indicate that I am sick. It indicates that I have common sense. Trade or work for what you want or create it yourself or ask for charity but to demand a system that requires some people to be forced to provide other people with services and goods is not a a sustainable situation.

          • LibertarianSocialist

Very true. She does however, support alternative organizations of economic structures (co-operatives, for example). This doesn’t make her a ‘socialist’ but she certainly supports anyone who would start a co-operative business.

As for nationalizing certain industries and putting them into the hands of workers, not sure. I have a feeling she would support it, if it happened. I would support it.

No a single socialist candidate has been invited to the Free and (Almost) Equal debate or that offered by (Almost) Democracy Now. This makes me even more proud to be a socialist. Now my political views are marginalized by BOTH the American neoliberal and progressive political parties.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mimi.soltysik Mimi Soltysik

      This is really unfortunate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1385167605 James Mahoney

Can’t wait for the debate. Also, while I can understand the complaints about Stewart Alexander not being invited, he doesn’t have the ballot access to potentially win like the four who will be here. I can’t wait. It’ll be a blast!

    • http://www.facebook.com/veronica.nowakowski.9 Veronica Nowakowski

Write-in votes create the ability to potentially win. However, more importantly, debates are not primarily about winning, but the spreading of ideas. Giving candidates access increases their ability to be on more ballots in future elections.

      • http://emperorbob.com Emperor_Bob

It can also be a catalyst to get more people involved in equal ballot access and bringing to an end the Republican and Democrat Party control.

      • Arrowface

Writein votes still need the a8ilty to 8e counted. For the most part they don’t.

Really? The Socialist Party…You do realize we just had four years of socialism?

Then you do not understand what socialism is if you think we just had it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/veronica.nowakowski.9 Veronica Nowakowski

The people owned and democratically controlled the means of production? I missed that.

    • Ruthann Amarteifio

What we’ve had four years of is corrupt capitalism—-

    • BallerDude3

I think it’s a mistake to consider Obama purely a socialist. Like all presidents for the past 100 years, their policies are, for the most part, a mix of socialism, fascism and corrupt, crony capitalism. I think most presidents do as they’re told. And when you consider that the oligarchs have always favored socialism and war it’s clear to me we currently and for quite some time have had a one-party system. Why would the wealthiest a-holes in the US, UK, Germany and Italy finance the Bolshevics during the second Russian revolution and then transfer technologies all through the cold war? Technologies that included the ability to MIRV their nuclear warheads. A huge technological leap forward. Didn’t they fear a system that would destroy them or at the very least strip them of their wealth? The answer is they didn’t because they controlled it. Same with Mao. They still control it. So to say Obama is a socialist and Romney is a fascist is not totally accurate. Both are both as well as corrupt. I favor a laissez faire system within the US but I favor balanced trade. Why are we shipping our manufacturing base to China and elsewhere? So not only is manufacturing being offshored our 1/2 trillion dollar trade deficit is money going to stimulate other countries’ economies, not our own.

      • bla

        Well said.

    • CaityJ

You’ve got to be kidding. If Obama’s reign is socialism, you don’t know socialism!

      • bla

It’s heading that direction. Either way, neither Romney nor Obama understand economics, and neither do socialists, not to mention the Constitution. And we are still talking about the United States, so why would we even want to listen to a socialist candidate when it’s so totally against a Constitutional republic?

        • http://www.myspace.com/kevinwaynesongs Kevin Wayne

How is Socialism against a Constitutional Republic?

    • neroden

No socialist thinks that Obama’s actions have remotely resembled socialism in any way.

Obama, like Bush, is on the fascist side of things — corporations owning everything.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mimi.soltysik Mimi Soltysik

Agreed with the sentiment about the lack of a socialist candidate in this debate. There are a lot of people who will not be represented by the voices on this panel.

Socialism isn’t a political stance, it’s an economic stance. That’s why you don’t see a “Capitalist party”. Candidates have socialistic, communistic, or capitalistic views on how to lead and manage our economy. It’s not a political platform.

  • http://www.facebook.com/veronica.nowakowski.9 Veronica Nowakowski

Free and Equal means real choices. If the Republicans could have 10+ candidates, so can third parties that show real difference. Just as the mainstream presidential debates limit choices, this debate is limiting choices and casting a false shadow unless the debate shows true breadth of views. A socialist choice is necessary, and so socialist candidates like Stewart Alexander should be invited right away.

  • Ruthann Amarteifio

Why are all the socialists crying about Alexander not being included in the debate? They must have thought this was a debate about economics, which is what socialism is: AN ECONOMIC SYSTEM. Still, it should be noted that as a business owner and a firearms enthusiast I can assure you that I will never allow my business to be appropriated by any form of common ownership while lifeblood still courses through my veins and I still have the physical ability to shoot a firearm.

    • Matt W.

(Unless of course a band of guitar-playing hippies takes over Congress and bans firearms, in which case I might as well convert my automobile to run on granola and surrender my willpower and common sense with the rest of the sheep.)

  • Infinite Spiral

I could be mistaken, but I see a lot of people decrying the lack of a socialist party candidate. While I can understand that from your point-of-view this makes sense (afterall, if you believe in socialism you don’t see things like me), but the President of the United States takes an oath on day 1 to the Constitution. While they all seem to violate that oath almost immediately upon assuming the office and even the current candidates seem to ignore its contents, anyone espousing a Socialist Platform has already positioned themselves as a liar when the take the oath. There is no support in the U.S. Constitution for socialism. We already have too much.

    • neroden

“To promote the general welfare”… actually there’s a lot of support for democratic socialism in the US Constitution. Don’t lie about it.

      • http://twitter.com/jonnycinq Jonny Cinq

        Promote, not provide.

        • that guy

          OH SNAP

      • Soda Bob

It’s GENERAL welfare, not Welfare. Big difference.

“The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government, are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.” — Federalist No. 45, James Madison

The fact is that federal government, under the Constitution, has ABSOLUTELY NO POWERS delegated to it to create welfare/social programs. All such programs at the federal level are, therefore, unconstitutional. Period.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ryan.j.susens Ryan John Susens

Please stop quoting the Federalist papers while trying to make a point about constitutionality. Quote the Constitution.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Johnson/100001505212456 Neil Johnson

The phrase you quote is merely a statement of purpose. It is not meant to grant the govenment the power to do anything it pleases. After all the Constitution granted the federal government only a limited set of enumerated powers.
We see how well that worked. The Congress passes any law they want without regard to the Constitution and the President takes any action he wants without regard to the Constituion.

      • Sam

To promote is not synonymous with “to provide” or “to dictate” or “to coerce” or anything else a corrupt Congress critter might come up with in order to justify appropriating and redistributing wealth on their whim and our dime.

    • Brian

as a Constitutionalist I agree that there is no justification in the Constitution for Federal Socialism (though States should be free to experiment with it at a state level if they so wish); however, this does not preclude a socialist from assuming the office of President. If a socialist became president, the proper thing for them to do would be to push for constitutional amendments establishing their socialist programs and until that time they should preserve the constitution.

the amendment process is part of the constitution. so is the possibility of convening a constitutional convention. so actually in theory you could run for president on the platform that you’d like to abolish the whole constitution and write a new one; but as president you couldn’t do that unless you went through the process to convene a constitutional convention; none of that would be contrary to your oath of office.

what is contrary to the oath of office is when people in government do things not authorized by the constitution but fragrantly disregard that and do it anyway.

  • BallerDude3

Why would we want to hear from socialist, communist or fascist candidates? If the idea, (my idea for sure), behind 3rd party candidates is to restore the constitution why would anyone want more of the same in the form of statist candidates? We’re trying to get away from fascist and socialist federal government policies. Socialist, fascist and crony capitalist policies are the problem.

    • bla

so true, the person who downvoted you doesn’t get it I guess, they can move to France

      • SocialistMe

Actually, France is going downhill. Their socialist party is the equivalent of the Democratic party here, which, sorry to say, is pretty sucky.

And, if you look at a TRULY social democratic(soft socialist) country, like Sweden or Denmark, they have much better economies, living standards, and higher gdp. Guess why? Their leftist parties. Denmark’s Socialist Workers’ Party, Sweden’s Social Democratic Party, Norway’s Workers’ Party, they have all been doing well. Look at the capitalistic countries, like the US and Canada. Downhill. Why? Robamney/Harper, and their greedy corporate friends. Canada’s situation with their teachers’ right to protest being taken away, and the US with their…. well, EVERYTHING. Same goes for, say, Britain, being controlled by the Conservative party right now, with Cameron as the Prime Minister. Wood bullets aren’t good for your people’s health, Cameron.

A TRUE leader would help their people to the fullest extent they could, by keep the environment clean and slow global climate change, universal health care in a single-payer system, having the banks owned by the government to stabilise the economy and prevent inflation(aka eliminating the private element to the federal reserve), legalise marijuana to help end the drug wars, allow gay marriage(having marriage regulations destroys the right to the pursuit of happiness), among many others.

Stewart Alexander embodies all of these principles I have laid out for you. Please re-evaluate your standpoint on Socialism, because it would ultimately create a better society for our children, ourselves, and the People, who this government was created to serve and protect.

        Stewart Alexander 2012!

        • Richard Shipe

The purpose of having third or fourth party viewpoints expressed is to hear ideas from across the spectrum and let the voters make an informed decision. I’m a Libertarian but I would like to hear what the Socialist candiate has to bring to the table. I was really impressed with Jill Stein in the last debate…she has good ideas. That’s what this is about…letting the people hear what the candidates (all of the candidates) have to say and let the people decide in what direction they want to go.

IF you agree that the “Big -5 banksters” have become “too big to fail” and control the Federal Reserve System as well as their owning a major portion of it, what steps would you take to take ownership and control and resulting misuse from them, and by doing so, would the general population be better served by a transfer of its ownership over to the Social Security System, so all profits from such banking inure to benefit teh general population of working stiffs and not the elite 0.1% (one-tenth of one percent) in this country? This transition would also put an end to creating money out of thin air as loans anda resulting self-perpetuating inflation but instead require a transition to sound dollars backed 100% by marketable commodities – including precious metals and gems.

Real presidential candidates would enforce existing laws and have the Pin Striped Bandits under serious investigation for Fraud Closure, Naked Shorting, CDO”s and SIV’s , etc.. I have seen so much ignorance about socialism on here. It’s pathetic. Socialism isn’t anti-Constitution, nor is it anti-freedom. Also, anyone who thinks Obama is a socialist doesn’t understand anything about both socialism and Obama. I’d hope that people interested in third parties would actually understand that.

    • Soda Bob

As I stated in response to someone else’s post above, yes Socialism is unconstitutional at the federal level.

Similarly, in Jefferson’s first Inaugural Address, he stated that one of the essential principles of our government should be “the support of the state governments in all their rights, as the most competent administrations for our domestic concerns” – in other words, the federal gov’t should be concerned with interstate commerce and foreign policy only, and if there are to be social programs, they should be created at the state level, not the federal, as no power to provide social/welfare programs is given at the federal level by the Constitution.

As Jefferson said in a letter, “On every question of construction [of the Constitution] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or intended against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed.”

      • Steve

Great explanation!!! Unfortunately, most people aren’t going to get it, or ‘choose’ not to. You wonder if the reason some people don’t have a problem with socialism, is because deep down they know that the candidate they support, President Obama DOES have a socialist agenda & mindset. So, their only defense is to say ‘what’s wrong with socialism,’ or ‘Obama isn’t a socialist,’ even though deep down, they know he is. The problem with incorporating socialism into a capitalistic economy, is that the United States, under the Constitution was not designed to survive a socialistic regime. Eventually, it will collapse. If something works, don’t try to fix (or ‘change’ it), or it’ll break!

While true, this would contradict the words in Jefferson’s letter, as well as his quote, “That government is best which governs least.” If we grant government the power to redistribute wealth (or, in this case, transfer ownership of production), it will eventually abuse this power.

However, there’s nothing in the Constitution to prevent workers from owning the means of production, and indeed, there are many such businesses in the United States.

Hello Soda Bob, Please note that in the Preamble to the Constitution we find the words, “…provide for the common defense, and promote the general welfare… However, in the Constitution you will read the second half of that phrase as, “…provide for the general welfare…”

With all the vaunted checks and balances that phrase is for all practicle purposes a blank check dor National Governmental powers.

We cannot count on the Constitution to protect our liberties. We need to go back a little bit and designate the Declaration of Independence as the Mission Statement for our National Government. Then we need to reconsile the Constitution with the limitations posed by the Declaration of Independence. Then our National Government will be charged wit protectin our liberties, and little else.

      What is a Socialist?

There are many variations of socialism, but a common denominator amongst socialist thinkers is they play God by believing (or pretending to believe) they have a so-called [legal right] to rule others by infringing up ones [inherent right] to defend life, liberty and property. The socialist wrongly thinks this is for the common good of one and all. They’re tendency is to rule by means of organizing [legal plunder]. Put another way, since law organizes justice, socialist believe THE LAW of the land should be ignored in favor of legalizing socialistic ideals for the good of education, labor, morals, religion, wars, welfare, etc., etc….which is why the Western World is financially bankrupt. There’s no need to argue the point, since no socialistic empire has ever survived throughout history – and America will be no different.

      • Harley BUD

You are NOT talking about Socialism. You are talking about communism or fascism. Socialism is a communal ownership of everything by everyone. You are afraid of the HUMAN perversions of that form of lifestyle and NOT pure socialism

        • Bill Singleton

BUD, you are making my point for me. Who is it that gives socialist thinkers, like yourself, a [lawful right] to infringe upon the [inherent rights] of others to protect life, liberty and property? In his Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx laid out a Platform of 10 Planks that describe the principles of communism. Basicaly, it’s a revolutionary [socialist movement] to create a classless, cashless and stateless [social order] that is structured upon common ownership of production, just as you describe You can view the Ten Communist Manifesto Planks at the link below. But note that each of the 10 Planks in the Manifesto involve [organized plunder] in one form or another. This is extreme Socialism under Communist Order.
          http://www.libertyzone.com/Communist-Manifesto-Planks.html

The bottom line is Socialist and Communist thinkers scorn freedom thinkers and play God by attempting to enforce what they believe is their [legal right] but not their [lawful right] to practice [organized plunder] by extending THE LAW beyond its intended purpose. To accomplish this twisted thinking, they put in place and exercise unjust, socialistic laws as a weapon to make it appear that it’s their [legal right] to [organize plunder] through usury interest, taxation, and property seizures. It is for this reason that Americans will live the rest of our lives under one of the following three societies:

          Option One
We will allow a [few citizens and the government] to use unjust, socialistic laws to steal our [inherent right] to defend life, liberty and
          property.

          Option Two
Or, we will allow [every citizen and the government] to use unjust, socialistic laws to steal our [inherent right] to defend life, liberty or property.

          Option Three
Or, we will allow [no citizen and no level of government] to use unjust, socialistic laws to steal our [inherent right] to defend our life, liberty or property.
The point is this: As long as state citizens keep supporting America’s two Socialist Parties, namely the Democratic and Republican Parties, state citizens will live in a society as described in Option Two above.

Socialism is leaders believing they know how to live your life better than you do. Therefore we fund the leaders to think for us. The fallacy is that it drives us to do nothing except go backwards. And they want to label it as progressive when it is the exact opposite.

        • starchild

Canada is nowhere near as socialist as places like Soviet Russia, Khmer Rouge Cambodia, Nazi Germany, and Maoist China were. If Canada were that socialist, it would be in deep, deep trouble. In fact, according to the right-wing Heritage Institute’s 2012 freedom rankings, Canada has *less* overall government interference in its economy than does the United States! (see http://www.heritage.org/index/ ).

Looking at the bigger picture, today’s developed country “welfare states” have proven that a relatively free and prosperous society can withstand a certain amount of government-imposed socialism without economically collapsing or ending up with the wholesale destruction of independent culture and people being rounded up and sent to concentration camps or to labor in the fields. But for how long? The logic and incentives of central planning and forced redistribution of resources, coupled with the corrupting influences of power, always point in that direction. A big, powerful, activist government represents a standing threat to freedom, and any society that allows such an institution to control it may be as little as one ambitious and charismatic madman away from a descent into tyranny and hell on earth.

Of course it should be pointed out that *socialism itself* is not the problem. When it is voluntary, and practiced on a small scale, communal living can be a humane and wonderful approach to living. Many families, for instance, operate more or less according to the socialist credo of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need”. It is only when people attempt to impose socialism coercively via government that it becomes an evil menace to humanity.

      • Harley BUD

Nazis were NOT socialists. They were fascists. Completely different. The VA is Socialism in action and intent but ONLY covers the military. THAT is what everyone in this country needs for basic healthcare. Socialism is fine if it doesn’t get perverted into another “ism” by evil humans

    • thethinkingone

It makes no difference, all political systems can either be corrupted and made into dictatorships, or shaped and ran by the people. The system itself merely directs a point of view that is hopefully followed and nothing else. But all words and descriptions are open to interpretation and manipulation to fit the agenda of whoever controls it. the founding fathers of the United States did their best to state “For the people by the people” and write the bill of rights to try and keep the power in the hands of the people as much as humanly possible, but eventually all systems of governance will eventually turn into monarchy if the people look to individual leader instead of all being leaders.

“The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.” – Thomas Jefferson

People who reject socialism are -not- ignorant about it. That’s why the US system is seeing so may people rejecting this centralized economic system and there is a gigantic surge of people preparing to leave the 2-party corporatist/ socialist hegemony.. Socialism is why our country is failing. Why does the left claim to hate privatization, but support the IRS and the Federal Reserve? Those are the two biggest Privatized institutions in the World. • http://www.facebook.com/airbrushsmith Craig Smith

One of the constants I’ve seen in all socialist governments throughout history is the infusion of one mans idea of what’s fair, and the extermination of those who disagree. When Cambodia was “liberated” all teachers, scientist, students, engineers, the elderly, sick and disabled, and anyone who was deemed a threat were killed. Only farmers were spared, to help feed their occupying Army. All copper wire was removed for use elsewhere. And the looting hoards took everything of value. Everything becomes property of the state, they get their cut, then dole out what they feel is your “fair share”. You decide nothing. The idealistic socialism you probably envision would include taking the wealth of everyone and split it up and give everyone their fair share, which would come out to almost $50,000 a year. But you forgot the “everyone does his share” part. What if your part was digging ditches, or milking cows? Or simply catching a bullet so the wouldn’t have to feed you. Now for the reality of global socialization, which is what is being purposed now. Remember “Act local, but think globally”. Split up the wealth of the world, and your fair share becomes less than $5000 a year, which is great for the millions in Africa living off the equivalent of $200 a year. How would that work for you?

Nowhere in the US Constitution does it specify what economic system the US must use so to claim that espousing socialism is unconstitutional is absolute bullshit. For your information the US Constitution grants Congress the authority to coin money and regulate its value. It also grants Congress the authority to regulate commerce and to take private property for public purposes as long as just compensation is provided to the owner of the property. What America really has is fascism not socialism.

Not sure how we can even entertain any candidate or political party, or suffer any elected official, whose plan and purpose is anything other than strictly constitutional. This is supposed to be a constitutionally limited republic, not a democracy whereby the majority can “progressively” vote to change the nation into a socialist or communist “utopia”. The Constitution Party and Libertarian Party are the only parties that seem to undetstand this. I couldn’t care less what drivel the other parties are peddling. No American should even seriously entertain them.

It would be nice if Stewart were represented (maybe he was busy) but at least Jill is the closest leftist in the group. Also, have all of you James Madison supporters forgotten about the spending and taxation clause? “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States…” This gives Congress FULL power to provide spending for projects and programs to benefit the nation as a whole. Alexander Hamilton and Chief Justice Marshall also stated that the U.S. government can spend and tax to create projects and programs to support education, healthcare, infrastructure, etc as long as it was general in nature and did not favor one section or group of the nation.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=46903413 Myron Mason

Even Benjamin Franklin believed that this clause supports the governments power to do so. The general welfare clause has been proven to support this as when the Confederacy of America drafted their constitution, they did not even include the word welfare in it. Not even the preamble had the word and their constitution was largely a copy of the U.S. Constitution.

Any presidential candidate on enough state ballots to receive the 270 electoral votes to win, should be included in any presidential debate. I know Rocky Johnson (Justice Party) and Virgil Goode (Constitution Party) didn’t meet this criteria, but were still included in the first debate. OK. So why wasn’t Stewart Alexander, the presidential candidate of the Socialist Party USA included??? The Socialist Party in America has been around since 1901.

“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security.” From the Constitution, which means If something is wrong with our Government, those who have the ability to take action, have the responsibility to take action. • Toto

I respectfully suggest that we stop using the words “socialism,” “communism,” and “progressivism,” and use instead the word “collectivism.” This will reduce the argument to its root divergence. Which do we support, individual freedom or tyranny by the group? And let us not forget that there are both right wing collectivists as well as left wing ones. By their records in office, both the mainstream candidates are collectivists. Ron Paul and Gary Johnson are by-in-large not collectivists, while Stein is definitely a collectivist. This is the crux of the matter at hand in this debate.

    • MIsterearle

That’s just silly. Government by it’s very nature is collective. To define that collectivity as inevitably “tyrannical” is to take an untenable position with regard to the entire enterprise. A government that supports individual freedom in all matters (since you do not seem to make any distinction between matters political, economic, social, and so on) does so as the will of the collectivity.

I would vote for either Jill or Gary, but the House of Representatives is controlled by the Republicans, and the Senate by the Democrats.

In a tie, the Republicans would pick the president, and the Vice President would be picked by the Democrats.

I voted for Ron Paul in the primary, but he lost, and he did not fight aggressively as he should have.

Because of these sad facts, I will be casting MY vote for Mitt Romney. Pres Obama has to go. He Failed. He raised the National debt by more than $6 Trillion dollars.

        Not likely.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ronald-Ramo/665460663 Ronald Ramo

All the more reason to stop taxing income for all corporations. Why does non-Fortune 500 companies pay for the welfare queen corporations?

      • http://www.myspace.com/kevinwaynesongs Kevin Wayne

No, it’s the reason why getting rid of corporate taxes won’t do anything.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ronald-Ramo/665460663 Ronald Ramo

I fail to see how the fact several multi-national corporations are able to manipulate the current tax code leads to the conclusion that eliminating the corporate income tax “won’t do anything”. It’s like saying that in a the guy who wins a fight with the help of the ‘third man in’, would still win a one on one fight.

          • http://www.myspace.com/kevinwaynesongs Kevin Wayne

Because the end result it the same. Those companies could easily turn around and invest what they are saving into creating job here domestically. Nothing is stopping them. So if you eliminate the Corporate tax altogether, there’s no motivation for change of behaviour.

  • http://www.facebook.com/doug.mael Douglas Mael

Although I still feel that either of these candidates would be preferable to Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, Jill Stein demonstrates with every answer she gives how completely naive (or clueless) she is regarding both Economics and Foreign Policy!

  • Daddio18

It’s not that I don’t get where Johnson is coming from, It’s just that his answers are too extreme and not reasoned out very well. Just cut slash abandon. Jill Stein’s positions seem much more thought out and reasonable. More realistic solutions for todays world. Especially concerning foreign policy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ronald-Ramo/665460663 Ronald Ramo

This is the red zone friend and desperate measures are necessary. Stein wants to grow the debt. Johnson wants to reduce the debt through attrition and decentralization.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mandy.mcewenmatti Mandy Mcewen-Matti

That’s because – ironically – the answer to the majority of our problems isn’t rocket science. It’s very simple. It’s not about what our government NEEDS TO DO – It’s about what they need to STOP DOING. In the words of Nancy Reagan JUST SAY NO! A very effective president isn’t one that get’s things done – it’s one that KEEPS more B.S. off the books, stop making policies and let things balance themselves out. It’s like being sick and continuing to pump yourself full of medicine after medicine and only making yourself worse from all the drugs and medication!

getting rid of farm subsidies will be the best solution to climate change. meat prices will then reflect it’s true price, and people will then reduce their meat consumption, and that will then reduce the carbon emissions like crazy. http://www.fao.org/docrep/010/a0701e/a0701e00.HTM

Oh yes I agree – when people are starving it’s much better for the environment.

      • http://supercarrot.com/ supercarrot

(i’m assuming that’s sarcasm?) vegetable farmers aren’t currently receiving very much in subsidies, so plant-based foods won’t rise in prices. the people will have more of their tax dollars to then spend on which ever foods they would like to spend it on. (instead of being forced to support the meat farmers.)

      • Richard Shipe

People would not starve. Subsidies are set out to keep farmers from producing food.

    • Richard Shipe

Doing away with subsidies for cheap corn would increase the cost of corn syrup. Our health would benefit as well.

Austerity. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Read Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). We will never default on our debt. We never have to sell bonds. If there is no inflation the debt is almost irrelevant. The USA is not a household, business, or a State. We have a fiat currency. Wake up, Governor. Austerity is how rich people stay rich, and poor people get poorer. Which side are you on???

  • jlowell

    The
point of elections isn’t to change policies; it’s to confirm that
things will remain the same. Hegemony is the real issue. What ‘the
people’ vote for is irrelevant. The fact that they still believe in the
prevailing order is what’s important. Policy is not influenced by
voting. Policy determined by the needs of the ruling elite. Not only are
the political parties owned by the ruling elite, so is the media that
determines what the electorate thinks. Moreover, the myth systems
(religion, education, etc.) are also controlled by the ruling elite.

  • Rizzo.Jizzo

Wait…I thought the Great Depression was a result of those nasty big banks…now it’s because of austerity measure?

People in the comments are acting like Jill is like “oh why don’t we put in government for everything? You can save everyone’s lives with government!!!”… listen to what she’s saying, she was LESS government than what we have now and what she want to keep or add she want to make efficient!!! Both of these candidates have very well thought out plans for the type of country they want to forge.

  • http://twitter.com/jmdenn the GREATER Platform

Clinton’s surplus was actually the beginning of that recession. If the government is in surplus then the private sector is in deficit. The only reason for that is to curb inflation. Greece, Italy and Spain can’t print money, and look at their economies.

  • Richard Shipe

Jill Stein is wrong. Europe has not cut spending AT ALL. Many instances of the New Deal only prolonged the Great Depression. The AAA killed cattle and burned crops. Minimum wage displaced people into unemployment. Price controls destroyed incentives to produce. Government does nothing in improving the economy.

    • Rizzo.Jizzo

Well said Richard. That’s exactly right. And don’t forget the factor of the Federal Reserve’s influence, which was very recently introduced at that time.

    • http://www.myspace.com/kevinwaynesongs Kevin Wayne

Excuse me? My friend lives in Holland and their congress passed cutback measures.

      • Richard Shipe

I’m not sure what you’re disputing if you are doing so. If what you say is true, then good for Holland! I hope their government is functioning with efficiency and a smaller scope of responsibilities.

        • http://www.myspace.com/kevinwaynesongs Kevin Wayne

Just the statement: “Europe has not cut spending AT ALL.”

      • Richard Shipe

Cutting back on government spending only works when people are allowed to embark on private enterprise without overbearing restrictions. Keep that in mind.

I can’t stand Jill Stein, she almost wants to set up a dictatorship with all these programs that will force people to do things. Johnson is hard to listen to also. I’m still going to vote for him though, he’s still better than everyone else, in ideals at least.

  • Kate

Come on, Johnson, stop being a jerk. You impressed me so much in the first debate….Now you’re reminding me too much of Romney. I’m watching these third party debates because I wasn’t impressed with the Romney/Obama debates. :(

People worried about Gary getting excited… well, if you only got to speak for :30 seconds out of every 30 minutes, you would want to make it count, right? On top of that, he actually sees the absurdity of the whole thing, and is willing to speak out about it. Jill just cares about pushing her agenda.

Jill Stein needs to try to be more concise. I agree with what she is saying but she doesn’t know when to stop talking. • BradL

how would you propose it is paid for? what about physicians and staff?

      • http://www.myspace.com/kevinwaynesongs Kevin Wayne

pnhp.org – It’s all there. Basically you are eliminating fraud, bureaucracy and cost overheads.

        • BradL

So you are advocating elimination of insurance companies, and that we all pay similar to current “premiums” but get the care we need? As long as the doctors et. al don’t get too greedy on the flip side. I could agree with that stance. How would you eliminate insurance companies???

          • http://www.myspace.com/kevinwaynesongs Kevin Wayne

The Canadian system is using it right now, it’s called “Single Payer.”

Right now taxpayers are subsidizing 60% of our health care system. The
costs come from fraudulent billing, cost overheads and bureaucracy. By
switching over to the Single Payer system, you eliminate much of this.
No private insurance, no profit motives gained from over-billing. No
need to hire a billing department. which also factors into medical
costs. Read more about it here: http://www.pnhp.org/resources/60-percent-of-health-spending-is-already-publicly-financed-enough-to-cover-everyone

They will make a mistake every once in a while and be dumbfounded on a few issues. Gary…yes, completely trashing the personal income and 35% corporate tax AND above all else, the so called “federal reserve bank”, is absolutely mandatory if this nation is to survive at all—-but that alone will not make jobs come “flocking back here”…why? It is because of CHEAP LABOR—-people in China and Mexico don’t mind living in abject squalor and filth. Well, we Western hemisphere Americans very much do mind and the quality of our work kicks the asses of theirs—-and we believe that the sweat off our brows entitles us to at least a thin sliver of the American dream. But the sociopaths on Wallow Street who RUN THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT ABSOLUTELY, believe that the ENTIRE American Dream is exclusively theirs and theirs alone and the rest of us have to settle for a bad acid trip….as long as greedy sociopaths are the only people left in America who are in a position to create jobs worthy of the name, then the situation can never get anything but worse. Too many sociopaths in this country and they are all in the wrong places. They need to be eliminated.

I think Johnson is wrong to just have no taxes for corporations since they will still take jobs overseas to make more money with using cheap slave labor. We should tax them higher for taking jobs away and give tax breaks if they come back to USA? We have to all pay a little more in taxes and cut some entitlements to pay off our debt so we have leverage with other countries versus borrowing. As I heard a Navy captain who spoke at Arizona State Sustainability Program, that we all better learn to become green since with nine billion people we are looking at some blow backs not seen before and wars we are not prepared for over resources. I think we need diplomats to have a background in sustainability so we can spread this green movement we so desperately need to change with our culture and religious institutions. Are we up to the task? I doubt, not in this sick political climate we have today.

I think if it’s made overseas (and can readily be produced in the US given investment in the proper facilities/training), it should be considered imported, and taxed at a higher rate (as you said). Doesn’t matter if it’s an American corporation; if most of their jobs are going to non-Americans, why should they have such easy access to the US market, right?

Gary, right on about war, and women’s rights. America was always the leader, I’m not real sure when it changed. But you are so right. We should not be the bully, that’s not who we are! We should set the example. And it all starts here with our votes. Pass this on. We are the people and we need to speak out. Two parties can not represent who we are.
    Thank you Jill and Gary.
I’ll be voting tomorrow for Gary.

  • NoteToSelf

I’m often left at the end of Gary Johnson’s statements saying “what is your point?” Anyway I think he’s hit the limit of his skills as a handyman, and although I disagree with most of Jill Stein’s economics I think she showed a much better speaking skills expected from someone who has a higher level of education. Although I like most of Gary Johnson’s issues, it was fun listening to Jill Stein speak and frustrating to listen to Johnson. Sorry Gary.

  • http://www.facebook.com/deborah.dills.5 Deborah Dills

Jill Was Awesome and very knowledgeable with a real plan to move this country away from a war economy, and corporatocracy that is destroying the middle class, a class that helped shape this country after WWII. This country has fallen with no end in sight to end the rein of the Federal Reserve and the bank bail outs that are basically stealing away the people’s money, The elite are running scared right now, and that’s way the rising police state is in full view. Our schools are a sham, our economy is not moving,, the poverty level is soaring, our jobs have been shipped overseas with corporations ruling the world, our elections, our prisons, our media, our military, our politicians, and it has got to end. Good job Jill and Gary:-)

  • NoteToSelf

Last question for the debate, “Can Dr. Stein diagnose what’s wrong with Gary Johnson?” LOL That would have been funny, but of course that’s not the focus. The focus is getting back at the two party system and breaking their stranglehold on the political system. I don’t know if either of these two can make a dent but I would like to see more progress on that focus.

  • Standup

In response to Dr. Steins criticism of free markets, laughing that if they solved any problems it would be the first time, I thought Gary would suggest that we haven’t seen it because we haven’t had free market solutions. We’ve had nothing but government intervention. I believe her criticisms of health care and education costs can be laid at the feet of government and she wants more of it with no apparent end to the deficit spending we have. Like Ron Paul says comparing the last two hundred years of US history to human history and our attempt to limit government and codify principles of liberty, it is freedom that is new, and it is tyranny that is old. The more we look to government the more tyrannical it becomes. Tyranny has existed throughout history, and because government represents coercion which can only shape behavior through force, like any gang that fights for power through force its existence is not proof of its benefit but it exists because it can. Developing a dependence on the government only develops a class of people who will protect it against those who would abolish it for more freedom.

  • joe marchione

Thank you Free & Equal for getting the word out. Just wish we could have stated the Third Party Crusade earlier in the election process. Listening to this debate & the first one actually gives me hope that we can break the stronghold that the 2 party system has on us. They have sold us down the river. I can only hope that Gary Johnson gets enough votes and wins enough states that neither one of the 2 party clowns gets enough electoral votes from the electoral college. They need 270 to win. Then maybe the Third party will get some air time for the run off.

  • FortyTwo

Did anyone actually watch this debate? I’m stunned at the way this happened. These two people didn’t co-exist in reality. They didn’t talk to each other, they instead just directed all of their comments to some “imaginary voter”. The “Rebuttals” weren’t directed at individual comments or even themes, but just another version of an earlier statement.

While I greatly appreciate the opportunity to see alternate candidates proposing ACTUAL IDEAS for fixing our problems, I wish that they’d communicate with each other and hold a real debate. Gary put out some pretty wild ideas at points and Jill didn’t really respond to those ideas at all. In fact, Gary didn’t really respond to Jill’s ideas, rather almost using the time to speak as a soapbox for his thoughts on the issues.

I can’t do this anymore. The mainstream political feed is so disgusting, stagnant with puppets controlled by money, while the only other candidates that should be allowed to interject new ideas into a debate are banned from entry and instead just shout two different ideologies at each other. We need actual conversations between all 4 actual candidates on the ballot. I want to see a real discussion about the direction of America, and I think it’s ridiculous that we do anything but that. All of these stupid ads and slogans and “plans” that don’t go into detail are just signposts to a disappointment. I hate all politics.

    • notetoself

I think the real important focus was for them to highlight their differences with the main stream candidates. Their differences and similarities with each other are inconsequential, as tempting as it would be to focus on that.

What bugs me about Jill is she states there is Climate Change? WTH? First it was climate warming then that lost statistical truth so now its climate change. Thats a tool of the elitest NWO Rat Bastards to seize control over our lives. I like Jill but she must not understand how the evil empire is using symbolism and global warming as a total control scam. She may just mention it because she is in the green party and and thats what green people do. Also she undertsands most Americans are totally asleep at the wheel so her talking about the falsified globaal warming scam wont ring too many bells. Dr Stein must have grew up in China. She is clueless about economic issues. She claims Corporate taxes have been lowered. And that the 1% need to pay more. This is insane. If you change the rate and tax the rich 100% and all corporations 100%, you would still not provide enough revenue to run this massive government ponzi scheme.

Like Chemtrail weather modifications, HAARP, Weather War technologies being used for an Agenda to terrorize the populace. These are the things that is happening. See “What In The World Are They Spraying” by G. Edward Griffin. I myself saw radar back scatter over a dozen states just before land fall. I have never seen that before.
