Since the DATE is changing, suggest you move this article to the top of your Web page and KEEP it there — you may disappoint a lot of people if they are unaware of this change in schedule. Keep up the good work; am looking forward to #2.

Yes we will. Thank you KokoMax

Why don’t you work with Ralph Nader rather than competing with him? Invite all four candidates, but give the top two more time, or extra questions. See if you can get Ron Paul to co-host with Nader. That’s the kind of powerhouse coalition between the libertarians and the progressives that you need to get people to pay attention. Nader’s format of inviting accredited media only may be wise, and perhaps only a small town-hall audience format. An open audience in DC may be hostile, or worse, empty. King was a good moderator. If he’ll do it again, let him.

      Great idea

    • Marci

Competing with Ralph? What gave you that thought? We’ve only supported him at Free and Equal. We are all about more debates. Bringing people together to speak out and share their feelings about proportional representation. Thank you for your ideas.

Dennis Andrew Ball should be included in these debates! Thank you!

      • http://wonderwheels.blogspot.com/ Gregory Wonderwheel

Why should Ball be included? As far as I know, he is not on enough ballots to get 270 electoral votes. He’s pretty much a joke candidate.

The whole question of “public banking” verses “private banking” should be explored. Private banking is just a way to redistribute wealth into the pockets of the economic royalists and elites. If we had public banking our national and state debts would not be paying interest into private bank accounts and would be managable. Also public banking helps to reduce the need for higher income and other taxes because the interest collected that would be profits for private banks can be used as revenue for the government.

a 5th candidate should be included. Dennis Andrew Ball. Where is Ron Paul?

      • http://wonderwheels.blogspot.com/ Gregory Wonderwheel

Ron Paul ran as a Republican candidate and lost. So he doesn’t get to represent a party in debates.
Ball is a laughing stock with his “family unit” absurdity. But the reason he is not included is that he is not on the ballot in enough states to win 270 electoral votes.

    • http://wonderwheels.blogspot.com/ Gregory Wonderwheel

The 4 candidates will be on stage together in the debate on Nov. 4 moderated by Ralph Nader.

  • Steve

Have Lawrence O’Donnell moderate. He’s the only mainstream anchor (as far I know) who, not only covered the last Free and Equal debate, but has also acknowledged the insidious two-party stranglehold and urged Americans to vote third-party. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9TAZRYO-Tc

    • Angela

Lawrence O’Donnell is a horrible choice, imo, not only is he wholey biased but he’s not very competent as a reporter. From what I’ve see of his show, it’s some of the worst of the MSNBC propoganda, in part because of his smug attitude. If you check out his interview with Luke Rudkowski you can see just how much he’s in the pocket of the system. I would avoid any debate with him as moderator unless he mindlessly spoke rote questions submitted by the public. Even then I’d question the choice of the questions. Big fat “no” to Lawrence O’Donnell from me.

My personal choice would be Tim Sebastian of BBC fame. He couldn’t be called biased because he doesn’t participate in US elections. I sincerely pray this next debate will be handled more professionally. It was painful to watch the last one with Larry King. He could have been so much better. What made it even worse was Christine. She sat there giggling like she was star struck with Mr. King. Please, please, please have a more informed & prepared moderator (and co-moderator “if” one is needed) for November 5th. The debates put on by Free and Equal and Democracy Now mark the beginning of a truly historic resuscitation of our moribund democracy. However, we need to start looking to 2016. Free and Equal could be, or could establish, an Alternative Commission on Presidential Debates that doesn’t exclude third party and independent candidates, and that sets up primary debates running through the primary season in 2015-2016, pitting progressives, including even Republican and Democrat refugees from the duopoly, against each other the way the duopoly Republicans battled each other this year. The ACPD must be non-partisan; that is, not controlled by the major parties, third parties, or individual candidates. The ACPD debates should feature seats on stage reserved for the leading duopoly candidates, whose non-attendance would highlight their refusal to discuss the real issues and be confronted with progressive ideas. The Internet makes all this possible without everything being controlled by the rich. Financial restraints should forbid the rich from drowning out alternative voices with money. Voting on the Internet should be strictly controlled to insure one man/one vote. Done correctly, this would allow choosing the most effective presidential and vice-presidential challengers to the duopoly candidates in 2016 by persuading the debate losers to stand aside, as the Republican losers stood aside for Romney in 2012. The primary voting could end in time for the prevailing candidates to win ballot access in all 50 states.

    • MarianGB

“…Voting on the Internet CANNOT be strictly controlled to insure one man/one vote….” If you meant only the debate-winner, for publicity, maybe I can swallow that. But if you meant run our Elections by Internet Voting— NO way! Trusted Elections require a voter-verified paper ballot, under conditions so that the paper ballots may be hand-counted.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Charles-Eva-Manning/100000620787204 Charles-Eva Manning

The technology is evolving. People could register and only be allowed to vote as registered members of the organization. That would allow geographical distinctions and limitations in the number of votes. Americans Elect had something like this set up, although I certainly don’t recommend Americans Elect as a model. Paper ballots (mail-in’s) could be used, if the postal service still exists in 2015-2016.

        • MarianGB

Internet voting can never become a method of balloting that runs with assured integrity. The administrator of the organization/agency/jurisdiction has total control over the data sent in, as well as the data tallies, and if motivated, can create whatever desired vote-totals to report out, with no way for independent outsiders to verify the tally. (I’ve been a programmer since the 1960′s.)
          http://NoLeakyBuckets.org

      • http://wonderwheels.blogspot.com/ Gregory Wonderwheel

Venezuela has the best system in the world. Electronic voting for instant results with a paper ballot for recount verification.

        • MarianGB

I respectfully disagree, Gregory, even not knowing how the paper ballots are created and consolidated. You used the term “recount”. That has multiple meanings, in my understanding a full count of paper ballots is only done when the initial tally is _very_ close (maybe 1/2%), but the corruption of internet voting can also be instant. All it takes is a special code in the vote-count program, set up by insiders, that switches a determined percentage of votes cast by the voters for the “wrong” candidate. Thus, they will be able to assure that there would never be a call for a “recount”, so the paper ballots would have no utility (value).

There are other circumstances that can be reviewed, and we still need to understand your meaning of the word “recount”.

          • http://wonderwheels.blogspot.com/ Gregory Wonderwheel

In Venezuela they have the machine show the vote both electronically and on the paper ballot. The voter confirms and the paper ballot goes into the ballot box. After the election, a mandatory percentage of paper ballots in randomly selected precincts are compared to the reported electronic results to see if there was discreptency. This is done without any need of a close vote in order to verify the electronic results conforms to the paper ballots.

          • MarianGB

Thanks for clarifying the system referred to. I was originally responding about the risks of internet voting. You are talking about voting at “traditional” poll-sites, with a machine which produces a voter-verified paper ballot. That is indeed good. As you describe the followup sampling for discreptencies, if that is properly done and with verifiable log-sheets of the movements and tallies, sounds like a good system to me.

          • http://wonderwheels.blogspot.com/ Gregory Wonderwheel

Right, I could have been more clear that I was not referring to internet, but to what I consider the best system so far that uses both electronic voting for quick results and paper ballots for verification that the electronic results haven’t been tampered with. I do think that internet voting has potential but is not yet near secure enough.

          • MarianGB

Ah, indeed. “Indefinite antecedents of the pronouns” gets us into trouble.

I will close by repeating that I cannot see a way ever to bring internet voting into a condition that satisfies all of: * Security, * Vote Secrecy, and * Integrity. The “Administrator” of a central system (a county, or a state), off in a dark room somewhere, has the ability to do things that “jiggle” the program to shuffle votes, and nobody outside would ever know.

Just so you know Ron did not at all throw in the towel. We saw good demonstrations of the American Brand of Fascism at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. The Republicans misused and abused the rules to put down Paul supporters, and the Democrats misused and abused the rules to change the platform at the last minute.

Folks, this is an inept news release.

I wanted to publicize the event, but to do that I will have to write my own news release. This news release is about the change of date, not about the presidential debate. It is packed with extraneous information that few people want to read. The media links are way at the bottom. When you click on the media links, the first one tells you that you missed the debate and the second one generates an error message.

I know that third parties face challenges, but the challenges shouldn’t be of basic competence. This is embarrassing.

  • Ron Helton

What a National Embarrassment that none of the American networks have yet opted to carry this feed. Even PBS who has made sure that they have covered every debate between President Obama and Monsieur Romney.

I contacted the programming director at WETA in Washington D.C. to ask why they are not carrying this content.

Our election system is truly broken when the top two parties are too afraid to even stand toe to toe in a debate with independent candidates.

  • Old School

Why have a mock vote and then only let those two sound off? Sounds a bit like what I thought F&E was fighting against. It seems to me that in order to give ‘fairness’ we ought to hear from all the candidates all we can.

BTW: don’t think it was a real debate in the strict sense of the word. More of a Q&A session. This observation was proved by the fact that there were few true rebuttals, which obviously annoyed Mr. King. Or perhaps the candidates were not willing to argue differences of opinion. Or maybe there would have been more if more time was available. But, I digress.

To reiterate; While I appreciate greatly the opportunity to hear the candidates I don’t understand this second phase. Sorry.

Keep up the good work. The real independent thinkers appreciate it!
